The Romano-British goddess of healing has overseen this place for two thousand years, receiving pilgrims seeking cure and respite from pain and illness. They bathed in the water and still drink it, they stayed overnight and had their dreams interpreted by a seer in the morning.
She was forged in fire to bear witness to water, buried in soil and brought back to air.
The entrance of the temple, however, bore ‘The Gorgon’ – an entity that is no longer understood. Here he enters to disrupt and combine, an unsettling and perturbing presence.
This short film work, shot on film photography at the Roman Baths in Bath, explores a desire for meaning, particularly in a state of chronic illness or trauma. Symbols from the artist’s Origin Unknown series appear in flashes, created in an altered state of consciousness in response to Britain’s oldest cave art at Creswell Crags.
This work acts as a prelude to further exploration of the subject matter in an upcoming solo exhibition (2026).
