Making An Appearance

Audio descriptions

Introduction

I began the residency with thoughts of the hand, drawing and gentle gestures. I muddled through a tricky search for found images that didn’t quite convey what I wanted them to but I guess what it did give me was an awareness of the gestures I was making which then led to the selected images above. My hand makes an appearance and acts as a stand in for my body. In each image there’s the delicate combined with something that feels slightly at odds with me. Busy, messy, rainy, fast paced. All conditions that are little challenges to contend with as soon as I step out.

‘Making An Appearance’ is a selection of photographs taken during the Vital Capacities residency and happened by chance. Maybe it happened because the lifts/elevators in my life keep malfunctioning, leaving me stuck in places. Being outside, after being inside, felt like a treat to savour. To be able to place my hand out of the car window felt quietly sublime in spite of the usual challenges of being outside. A small expression of freedom and gratitude.
